The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has determined that the following practices shall prevail in the United States: Fast and Abstinence are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all those who have celebrated their 18th birthday until one has celebrated their 59th birthday. Abstinence from meat is to be observed on the Fridays of Lent by all who have celebrated their 14th birthday.
The Church recognizes that there are chronically or seriously ill individuals who cannot fast or abstain. The church still calls for these individuals to participate in acts of penance and works of charity. These can be performed throughout the week; however it is especially appropriate for these acts to be performed on Fridays in place of Friday fast.
No one can be dispensed from the necessity of doing penance. Catholics are strongly urged to practice voluntary acts of mortification and works of charity. The bishops of the United States have urged Catholics to consider abstaining from meat on Fridays “as a tangible sign of our need and desire to do penance for the cause of peace.”
La Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Los Estados Unidos ha determinado que las siguientes practicas deben de prevalecer en los Estados Unidos: Ayuno y Abstinencia debe de ser observado el Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo por todos aquellos que hayan cumplido los 18 años de edad y hasta los 59 años. La abstinencia de carne es observado los Viernes de Cuaresma por todos los que hayan cumplido sus 14 años de edad.
La Iglesia reconoce que existen aquellas personas que están crónicamente o seriamente enfermas y no pueden ayunar ni abstenerse. De cualquier manera la Iglesia llama a todas las personas a participar en actos de penitencia y en obras de caridad. Esto puede hacerse durante la semana; sin embargo es especialmente apropiado que estos actos se hagan el viernes en lugar del ayuno el Viernes.
Nadie puede ser dispensado de la necesidad en hacer penitencia. Se insta energéticamente a los Católicos a practicar la mortificación voluntaria de actos y obras de caridad. Los obispos de Los Estados Unidos han instado a los Católicos a considerar la abstinencia de carne en viernes “como un signo tangible de nuestra necesidad y deseo de hacer penitencia por la causa de la paz.

At Masses today, Catholic parishes in the United States are for the first time in about forty years using a new English translation of all the prayers. These prayers are found in The Roman Missal, the large book that we are accustomed to seeing the priest use at our Eucharistic liturgies. In the early part of this century, the late Blessed Pope John Paul II called for the original Latin Missal (the official prayer book for Mass for the entire Catholic Church worldwide) to be re-translated into the various languages prayed throughout the world. In particular, he and other Church leaders felt that the English translation could be improved. He called for new translations that would be much more like the Latin texts upon which they are based, so that all Catholics throughout the world would become more closely united by praying translations that were closer to the original. The words that we pray at Mass express our beliefs; it is important that the translations capture and express these beliefs clearly. Something New! You may have noticed a change in our “Building Fund” envelopes… now they are YELLOW!
As we have begun working on this project, we wanted to start fresh and look at this project in a new way. So while
the color has changed, the purpose has not. All donations in these envelopes are required to be used for the Renovation
Project of our church and its facilities, so keep on giving! We will be speaking to the parish next weekend about the
project and look forward to sharing the progress with you.
